Facebook Profile Work

Featured Albums

Album self view — grid and post view.

Opportunity:

One of my favorite projects at Facebook was when I collaborated with the Sharing team to redesign the Albums experience. Photos are a huge part of Profile expression and what people seek about others immediately, and I believed there was a huge opportunity to simultaneously improve the storytelling capability of Albums themselves (not just photos and videos but text posts, check-ins, collaborative spaces!) while exploring their presence on Profile. While the ability to feature Albums on your Profile has been deprecated now in favor of Story Highlights, everything else about the experience remains available for use.

Strategy:

  • Enable users to add any post type to an Album to tell rich stories about events that don’t always have a visual piece of media added, but enliven the whole narrative.

  • Show a feed view for albums that enables a more immersive experience for each post, as well as displaying individual post engagement as an incentive for creators.

  • Maintain a visuals-only view for those viewers who still prefer browsing this way.

  • Allow users to pin specific albums to the top of their Profile in the public space to enable unconnected people to get to know them (deprecated).

Consumption:

  • Albums are still found in the Profile > Photos > Albums tab

  • Viewers can toggle between a grid view (visual content only from all posts) and a feed view (individual posts)

  • Viewers can engage with the album as a whole by liking/commenting/sharing at the top, as well as engage on individual specific posts.

Management & Collaboration:

  • Album details are all managed through the ••• entrypoint in the navigation of each album.

  • Title, description, privacy, and contributors can be changed.

  • Adding a contributor allows them to add posts as they wish to the album and edit the same details. Album privacy for contributor albums updates to show that this album is now visible to all contributors’ friends as well, but can be changed to “only contributors” or Public (everyone) as well.

Album management — adding contributors.

Profile Filters

Problem:

UX research showed that people hesitated to share on Facebook (through Profile especially) because they felt that posts were “permanent” and there might come a time in the future where they didn’t want new friends to see content that no longer represented them.

Solution:

  • Ephemeral sharing: we’d introduce Stories to Profile as a future-facing solution

  • Post Filters: I pitched the idea for post filters as a crucial management tool to address the fear of “permanence” from past sharing. Being able to find the posts that no longer represent you was the first step in order to manage your identity.

Experience:

  • Entrypoint next to Posts header on your own profile

  • Ability to filter by date, post author, privacy, and whether or not you’re tagged in the post.

Bulk Post Management

Context:

As a followup to Post Filters, I wanted to ease the burden of post-by-post management. For people who wanted to hide or delete large swathes of content they no longer felt represented them, how could we make this easier?

Experience Notes:

  • The entrypoint for bulk post management is also placed above all your own Profile posts, close to Filters.

  • Within post management, you can filter posts as well through the upper right hand glyph.

  • Post actions are limited by the posts you select.
